Great Quotes from the play Measure for Measure May 25, 2012 12:00 AM | Tagged as courage, doubts, fears, Love the sinner, measure for measure, traitors

This first quote is probably one of my all time favorite Shakespearean quotes and I use it as one of my personal “mottos for life”:

  • Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win
    By fearing to attempt. (1.4.84)

More good ones:

  • Good counsellors lack no clients (1.2.97)
  • Now, as fond fathers,
Having bound up the threat'ning twigs of birch,
Only to stick it in their children's sight
For terror, not to use, in time the rod
Becomes more mocked than feared; so our decrees,
Dead to infliction, to themselves are dead,
    And liberty plucks justice by the nose;
The baby beats the nurse, and quite athwart
    Goes all decorum. (1.3.23)
  • We must not make a scarecrow of the law,
Setting it up to fear the birds of prey,
And let it keep one shape, till custom make it
Their perch and not their terror. (2.1.1)
And this is a sad truth:
  • Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall. (2.1.42)

This one is such an important point:

  • Condemn the fault and not the actor of it? (2.2.37)
Or in other words, “Love the sinner and not the sin", which is what my church teaches.

All such good quotes from one play. Wasn't Shakespeare an amazing author?
